In celebration of their 31st anniversary, the Banag Banag Association brought to life last 30 August 2025, the Spanish & Latin cultural influences to the Philippines.  The vibrant event was held at West HQ, Rooty Hill.

The term Banag Banag means ‘dawn’ and symbolises hope, new beginnings and highlights the heritage of the Bisayan speaking regions of the Philippines in particular, the province of Cebu.

The charming and delightful, newly elected president for 2025 -2027, Jenina Cotelo welcomed the guests with a pledge to give her best to the association. “This year, I embrace this new role with more energy, deeper passion and stronger motivation to continue Banag Banag’s mission and to bring light where it is needed most,” she said.  Over the years, the association has been devoted to charitable work focussed on education, age care and other humanitarian initiatives.

It was “Ole” all the way as guests sparkled in their brightest reds, ruffled skirts, with Spanish shawls and flowers decked on their hair in the theme of the night.  Philippine Consul General Charmaine Rowena Aviquivil of Sydney congratulated the association for their charitable work. Also present from the Philippine Consulate were Vice Consul Diana Marie Jimenez-Leomo and Cultural Officer Rowena Garcia.  Councillor Dorothy del Villar represented Mayor Brad Bunting and congratulated Banag Banag for their community spirit.

The night’s entertainment pulsated and was packed with mixed music from Spain and even Italy, Portugal, Brazil and France.  Linda Bishops’ Dance Ensemble swayed in their beautiful Spanish ternos for the “Habanera,” while Baile Internationale took to the stage to perform the more contemporary dance number, “Mas Que Nada.”

As always, the decor for the lobby and stage were creatively superb. A replica of Cebu’s famous guitar was on display and .neon lights that spelt the night’s theme – ‘Ole’.

Banag Banag favourite son, Max Lopez hosted the evening and judges Arlene Amor and Michelle Ramas awarded the Best costumes for the night to Max Enconmienda and Mama Nena.
