The Rhythm of Brian

August 21st, 2013 · No Comments

He was born with the rhythm in him.  That’s Brian Lorenz – double blessed with a voice that’s pitch perfect and moves that will sway you.  Yes, he’s singer, dancer, all wrapped up in a small physique that spells, all-round entertainer.  And whatever he does, whether it’s singing or dancing, one thing is for certain, the emotion he exudes will grab you.  You’ll feel the depth of his soul as he reaches for those high notes and he’ll move you with every stride as he glides, twirls and leaps across the dance floor.   For every song, for every step, he takes you on an emotional melodic journey.

Brian Lorenz, a native of Samar was the middle child of five boys.  Although his parents had hoped for a nursing career for him, he was more inclined towards entertainment and he felt he was destined for the stage. Through it all, his father had always been supportive of his dream to perform. From a young age he was singing at school and community events.  His acceptance in a Choir landed him a scholarship at Divine Word University where he completed a Mass Communications Degree.

Upon graduation, he tested his career prospects with famed burger house, Jollibee and took on every role possible but proved that his forte was with people and entertainment.  His father later opened up a bakery for him to manage but his restless soul needed to perform and he moved to Manila to try his luck.

In Manila, undeterred by the entertainment culture and disappointments, he soaked up every opportunity that fell on his lap.  From dance workshops, a television stint with Channel 7 and he became part of the danceforce team that toured Japan, Singapore, Guam and other USA states.   He was one of the organizers of the Guam’s Dancesport Federation.  Never one to settle for mediocrity, and always on the lookout for self-improvement, he perfected his dance techniques by taking up ballet and jazz lessons.  He topped it up with a Diploma in Exercise and Sports Science at University of the Philippines.

He’s been switching and swinging between singing and dancing but finally he has embraced both talents that seem to have blended well. Which one would he rather?  “Hmmm, I don’t know – that’s difficult” he replies with a twinkle in his eye.  “I hope I can combine both in a musical and I hope in the future I am able to open up my own studio” he quips.

In animated fashion, with head tilts and hands twirling to tell his story, he says:  “I believe in destiny. I’m sure I was meant to be here in Australia.  Things just fell right in the right place.”  His dream to get to the USA fizzled out but it redirected him to Australia.  To stay, he took his Hairdressing Certificate.

But he fondly recalls how he found his voice again in Australia. Homesick, he joined Paligsahan ng Talino hoping to win the return trip to the Philippines.  “I was missing home so much, gusto ko lang umuwi, so sumali ako” he said.  And he clinched it with his rendition of “The Prayer.”  Soon everyone was asking him to be a guest at their event and the community simply couldn’t have enough of him.   His innate talents were too difficult to dismiss and he quickly became one of the most sought after performers in the community.

And then it was back to dancing, when he landed a performing arts scholarship at Wesley College where he completed a Bachelor of Dance major in Ballroom and Latin.  He now lectures dance theories at Wesley and is also a dance instructor at Arthur Murray Dance Studios at Castle Hill.

“I’m a dreamer,” he says.  “I dream big!”  Yes, he’s a dreamer but he’s someone who doesn’t mind doing the walk with the talk.  Bursting with passion and combined with hard work, he’s on his way. For Brian, it’s been a long journey but things are just the way he’d like it to be right now.  On 9th November, Brian Lorenz steps up to centrestage for his first solo concert at Pabico at Mt. Druitt. Be there when he takes that long awaited and well- deserved bow.  Take a bow Brian!
